Mayla Strong is back. In the sequel to Just As I Am, Virginia Smith continues Mayla’s story. Kentucky is cold and covered with snow when Mayla gets laid off from her day job, declares her love to Pastor Paul (who doesn’t feel the same way), and has made one of her best friends so mad, he will no longer speak to her. Nothing seems to be going right for Mayla.
Deciding this is a perfect time to visit her grandmother in Florida, Mayla takes a vacation from her problems. The only problem is that they seem to follow her, literally, to her sunny beach escape. Once there, she discovers her grandmother is manipulative and controlling her Aunt Louise’s life. As friends start arriving, Mayla tries to help everyone, but makes a bigger mess, and soon learns that she much like her grandmother. Casting all her cares upon the Lord is the only way she can help anyone.
I enjoyed this novel as much as the first one. Virginia Smith makes Mayla even more lovable, and despite Mayla’s mistakes, a role model for how she relates to God. When she lets go of her control in situations, God takes control and makes all things work for His purpose. I am eager to read more Virginia Smith books and highly recommend them. You will not only have a wondrously entertaining story, but learn lessons from the Lord as well.
