I Loved This Book!
Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss
The novel, Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss, begins with 16-year-old Katherine (Katy) journaling in her diary. This is a captivating look at a woman’s life from her teens to the end of her life. I absolutely loved this book. As tragedy after tragedy touches her life, she grows in her relationship with Christ.
As a teen, she is a strong-willed child, who is trying to better herself and live a godly life, but she struggles with anger and a haughty spirit. In despair that her attempts to change are futile, she counsels with her pastor, and she eventually realizes that she has never accepted Christ on His terms. When she does, her life takes a drastic change of direction.
Through Katy’s life, you can see God’s hand. Even through devastating loss, she learns to lean on her Lord. As her own worst critic, she still struggles to lead a sacrificial life. She rarely sees her progress as a devout Christian. As her family grows and changes, she struggles with a constant malady of ill health. This weakness, oftentimes, keeps her from serving her family and others the way she would like. However, she learns to do what she can and grow from her circumstances.
This novel was a great example of Christian suffering and acceptance of God’s sovereignty through difficult times. Katy’s life spoke to me about trusting God in my life with the blessings He has given me. Regardless of whether we believe God is working for our good, He is, because it is His nature to do so.
